Directorate of Academic Planning

The Plateau State University, Bokkos in line with its vision and its commitment to effective coordination, streamlining, monitoring and Evaluation of Academic Standards and Academic Development processes of the University, established the Academic Planning Unit in 2010/2011 Academic Session. The Academic Planning Unit is under the Vice-Chancellor’s Office and serves as a focal point for liaison with the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the implementation of institutional and national policies on higher education as well as for quality control. The Unit thus ensures that the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (B-MAS) set for all degree programmes in Universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC) is attained and maintained at all times in all programmes offered in the University.


The Academic Planning Unit is headed by a Director who is a professor with Academic Planning experience or a professional staff. He is directly responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the day-to-day administration of the unit. The Unit assists and advises the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to the academic planning of the University, including issues pertinent to staff development programmes.

He is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor and holds office at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor.

The Director is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor in respect of all matters relating to academic planning and projections of the University in line with the approved Academic Brief. The Director shall be a member of the Curriculum, Examination and other Senate Committees etc.


Academic Planning unit is presently guarded under the leadership of Prof. Bulus N. Gyang, a professor of Physics.

Specifically, the Directorate of academic Planning is responsible for:

  • production of the Academic Brief of the University;
  • revising the Academic Brief of the University as and when due;
  • evaluating proposals for new academic programmes;
  • monitoring and maintaining academic standards through periodic curricula review;
  • advising the Vice-Chancellor on resource allocation to and staffing of the University based on sound analytical criteria;
  • preparing documents or items of information relating to academic matters that will be forwarded to the National Universities Commission on request.
  • The Director of Academic Planning works in collaboration with the academic heads of faculties, Registry and the bursary to obtain and maintain an up-to-date database of vital information.

Basic Services Offered

For purposes of monitoring and evaluating performance in academic activities of the university, in line with the B-MAS guidelines, Academic Planning Unit carries out the following functions;

  • Preparation of lecture Time-Table every Semester.
  • Preparation of Examination Time-Table every Semester.
  • Preparation of Annual Academic Calendar for the University.
  • Compiling and Keeping data of Students by Gender, L.G.A, State, Faculty and Departments.
  • Compiling and Keeping data of Academic Staff (both Permanent and Visiting)
  • Relating with the PLASU desk Officer at NUC on behalf of the University.
  • Coordinating with the Deans, on the directive of the Vice-Chancellor on issues of Academic Development.
  • Serve as the desk in-charge of Accreditation in PLASU.
  • Serve as Member of some statutory and ad-hoc Senate and Management committees.
  • Collects and stores publication of statistical nature, from other Universities, Faculties and Departments.
  • Documenting and storing information on Academic programmes of the University.
  • Using collected data for making projections and advising the University in areas of concerns etc.
