PLATEAU STATE GOVERNOR, INAUGURATES GOVERNING COUNCIL FOR STATE OWNED VARSITY

Plateau State Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Council of the Plateau State University Bokkos.
The members of the Governing Council were inaugurated along with Chairmen and Members of Boards, Parastatals, Commissions as well as Governing Councils of Tertiary Institutions of the State at an event at the New Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos.
Inaugurated by the Governor were Professor Obiora Ike, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council who joined the event via zoom, Professor David Yakubu Pam, Honorable Samuel Agwane Parah, Professor (Mrs) Bibiana Bawa, Honorable Dan Dul, Mrs. Valentina Dariye, Honorable Diket Plang and Mr. Chris Maiyaki as members of Council.
Governor Simon Lalong urged them to bring to bear their wealth of experience in serving the State on the Governing Council adding that the State has high expectations from them.
He reminded them that their appointment is not an opportunity for self-aggrandizement or self-enrichment neither is it an opportunity to flex muscles and engage in abuse of power or superiority bout with the management teams of the agencies.
The Governor said “You should be reminded that you are not the Chief Executive Officers of the organizations as your functions are clearly spelt out in the laws establishing those agencies. Specifically, your role is to ensure that you critically think through issues and give policy direction to the agencies as you oversee their activities to ensure that it is in tandem to the rules and regulations establishing them. You are neither to usurp their day-to-day functions nor engage in rivalry and competition with the management”.
Governor Lalong on the other hand strongly directed Management of the University to work in collaboration with the newly inaugurated governing council to ensure that they fulfill their mandates.
He however, urged the Chairman and Members of Council to be thorough, tough and diligent in monitoring the activities of the University to ensure diligent execution of policies and programmes.
He threatened to hold members of Council accountable if under their watch the university's resources are mismanaged, stolen or misapplied.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Monsignor Professor Obiora Ike is a Professor of Ethics and Intercultural Studies at the Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu State, Nigeria. He is the Founding Director of the Catholic Institute of Development, Justice, Peace and Caritas (CIDJAP), currently the Executive Director of the Geneva based Global Ethics Centre.
He is a Scholar, Writer, Teacher and Professor with several years’ experience and has a demonstrated history of working in civil society organizations, non-profit and religious institutions.
Professor Obiora Ike takes over from Professor Attahiru Jega whose tenure has since expired leaving the University without a Governing Council for more than two years.
Present at the inauguration ceremony were all management staff of the University led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Yohana Daniel Izam.
